Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin numerus clausus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin numerus clausus, lit. ‘closed, or restricted, number’ < classical Latin numerus number n. + clausus closed (see close adj.). Compare French numerus clausus (1908), German Numerus clausus.
A fixed (maximum) number of entrants admissible to an academic institution. Also: a restricted number of educational places allocated to a particular (esp. racial or ethnic) group.
