Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English NOx.
Etymology: < NOx, chemical formula representing oxides of nitrogen < N , chemical symbol for nitrogen + O , chemical symbol for oxygen + x , indicating an unspecified number of oxygen atoms in the molecule (compare X n. 3).
Science.
Oxides of nitrogen, esp. considered as atmospheric pollutants.Nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are the principal pollutants.
