Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin abanet; Hebrew 'aḇnēṭ.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin abanet (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome) and its etymon Hebrew 'aḇnēṭ belt, girdle (Leviticus 8:13), perhaps an Egyptian loanword (compare Egyptian bnd to wrap up, clothe (rare)).
1. Jewish History. A girdle made of fine linen, used esp. by Jewish priests.

1906 J. Meagher How Christ said First Mass ix. 299 The priestly girdle called the Abnet was a linen band three fingers broad.
1972 J. G. Jackson Man, God, & Civilization xi. 234 The waist of the priest was circled by an abnet, a girdle woven from the finest linen, and dyed with the colors blue, purple, and scarlet.
2. Medicine. A girdle-like bandage. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
