1.
a. The northern end of something; (in quots. 1641 and 1902) spec. the north side of the altar in a church. The position taken by a priest consecrating the elements of Holy Communion became a matter of controversy in the late 19th cent. following the prosecution of John Purchas (1823–72) in the Court of Arches in 1869 for his adoption of the north-end position. High Church celebrants preferred to stand in front of the altar, facing east, with their backs to the congregation (cf. eastward position n. at eastward adv., adj., and n. Compounds 2, north side n.).
