Compare Old Occitan nugacio stupid remark, stupidity, silliness (c1340), nugatio (c1350), Italian †nugazione (1363), †nugatione (1611 in Florio) unnecessary repetition in speech or writing.In form newgacon punningly after the name of Newgate prison (see Newgate n.):1583 W.
