Notarn.2

Brit. /ˈnəʊtɑː/, U.S. /ˈnoʊˌtɑr/
Forms: 1900s– NOTAR, 1900s– Notar.
Origin: Formed within English, as an acronym. Etymon: English no tail rotor.
Etymology: Acronym < the initial letters of no tail rotor (see quot. 1981).
Aeronautics.
Frequently attributive. A proprietary name for a system of helicopter propulsion in which an anti-torque force is generated by the circulation of air through and around the tail boom, thus dispensing with the need for a tail rotor; a helicopter propelled by this system.
ΚΠ
1981 Business Week 27 July 36 c/1 Hailed by Hughes as a ‘revolutionary’ design, the Notar (for no tail rotor) helicopter is a combination of several previously attempted innovations seasoned with a few new ideas.
1990 New Scientist 15 Sept. 35 In helicopters equipped with NOTAR technology, about 60 per cent of the antitorque comes from an aerodynamic effect.
1996 Los Angeles Times (Nexis) 2 Oct. b3 Another feature of the NOTARs is the improved safety for pilots and residents. The lack of a tail rotor reduces the hazard of the chopper striking a structure or objects nearby.
