Etymology: < German notal (A. E. Ortmann Grundzüge der marinen Tiergeographie (1896) iv. 59: see note) < classical Latin Notus or ancient Greek Νότος the south wind, god of the south wind, the south (see Notus n.) + German -al -al suffix1, after Notalian adj. Compare boreal adj.Ortmann cites T. N. Gill as the ultimate source of the term, but Gill uses Notalian adj. (see quot. 1877 at that entry).
