Etymology: < Anglo-Norman notabilité notable matter and Middle French, French notabilité noteworthiness (1260–70 in Old French), prominent person (1802) or its etymon post-classical Latin notabilitas indication, distinctive mark (5th cent.), distinction (c1125 in a British source), noteworthy point (late 14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin notābilis notable adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Spanish notabilidad (early 15th cent. or earlier), Italian notabilità (1745), Portuguese notabilidade (1783).
