Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nōnus , quadruple adj., quintuple adj.
Etymology: < classical Latin nōnus ninth (see nona- comb. form) + -ple (in e.g. quadruple adj., quintuple adj.). Compare post-classical Latin nonuplus ninefold (c1120 in a British source), Middle French, French nonuple , adjective (1550). Compare earlier noncuple adj.
