Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin odōrus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin odōrus sweet-smelling, fragrant, strong-smelling, pungent ( < odōr- , odor odour n.) + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin odorosus, oderosus (c550 in a British source), Italian odoroso (1353), Middle French, French odoreux (1537). N.E.D. (1902) notes that the word was formerly sometimes pronounced /əʊˈdɔərəs/.
Having or emitting an odour. Originally: sweet-smelling, scented, fragrant. Now (usually): having a strong, characteristic, or unpleasant smell; malodorous.
