Etymology: < nucleo- comb. form + proteid n.1, originally translating German Nucleoproteïn nucleoprotein n. (compare quot. 1886). Compare later German Nucleoproteïd (e.g. Emmerich & Löw 1899, in Zeitschr. f. Hygiene 31 10; now usually Nukleoproteid).
Biochemistry. Now rare.
