Etymology: < nucle- (in nuclein n.) + -ic suffix (originally in nucleic acid, after German Nucleïnsäure (R. Altmann 1889, in Arch. f. Anat. u. Physiol.: Physiol. Abt. 524); now usually Nukleinsäure).
Biochemistry.
1. nucleic acid n. any of a class of polymeric substances (polynucleotides) that carry genetic information in cells and viruses or are involved in the transcription or translation of proteins. Cf. deoxyribonucleic acid n., ribonucleic acid n.
