单词 -escent
释义

-escentsuffix

Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: late Middle English–1500s -escente, late Middle English– -escent.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin -ēscent-, -ēscēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin -ēscent-, -ēscēns, the ending of present participles of verbs in -ēscere , chiefly inceptives (see -esce suffix). Primarily occurring in words < Latin participles, as deliquescent adj., effervescent adj., obsolescent adj., putrescent adj., where the general sense is ‘beginning to assume a certain state’.Compare French -escent.
Forming adjectives, representing Latin -ēscentem, the ending of present participles of verbs in -ēscĕre, chiefly inceptives, < verbs of state in -ēre. Primarily occurring in words < Latin participles, as deliquescent, effervescent, obsolescent, putrescent, where the general sense is ‘beginning to assume a certain state’. Hence in recent times the suffix has been used (both in English and in other European languages) to form adjectives upon nouns, as in alkalescent (? after acescent), and in several words referring to play of light or colour, as fluorescent, iridescent, opalescent, phosphorescent.
