Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin novācula , -ite suffix¹.

Etymology: < classical Latin novācula razor ( < a first element cognate with Sanskrit kṣṇau- to whet, kṣṇotra whetstone (see note) + classical Latin -cula -cula suffix) + -ite suffix¹.Classical Latin novācula and Sanskrit kṣṇotra represent a doubly extended form of an Indo-European base, extended forms of which are seen in ancient Greek ξεῖν to scrape, polish (see xesturgy n.) and ancient Greek ξύειν to scrape (see xyster n., xyston n.), ξυρόν razor (see xyrid n.).

Chiefly Geology.

Originally: any of various smooth, hard rocks used to make whetstones. Now: spec. a dense, hard, fine-grained, siliceous rock resembling chert, with a high content of quartz microcrystals.
