Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nova , chord n.2
Etymology: < classical Latin nova, feminine of novus (see new adj.) + chord n.2The Novachord was the first electric organ where the system for producing tone was fully electronic (as distinct from the rotating electromagnetic wheels used in earlier electric organs); it was produced commercially by Laurens Hammond in 1939–42. The technology was described, but the Novachord not named, in 1938 (in Official Gaz. (U.S. Patent Office) 9 Aug. 431), and 1939 (in Official Gaz. (U.S. Patent Office) 6 June 264). The instrument is described in detail in 1939 Electronics Nov. 16–19, 92–93.
