Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin abluent-, abluēns, abluere.
Etymology: < classical Latin abluent-, abluēns, present participle of abluere to wash off or away < ab- ab- prefix + luere to wash (see pediluvium n.). Compare ablutionary adj., and (with use as noun) post-classical Latin abluentia cleansing medicines (1702).
Originally Medicine. Now rare.
