Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Nonose.
Etymology: < German Nonose (E. Fischer 1890, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 23 934) < classical Latin nōnus ninth (see nona- comb. form) + German -ose -ose suffix2.
Chemistry.
Any monosaccharide having nine carbon atoms in the molecule, esp. when these are all in an unbranched chain.
