Etymology: < classical Latin octastȳlus having eight columns (Vitruvius) < ancient Greek ὀκτα- octa- comb. form + στῦλος pillar (see styloid adj.). Compare Middle French, French octastyle (1547 as adjective, 1836 as noun), octostyle (1580 as adjective, 1676 as noun), Italian octastilo, adjective (a1798; now also as ottastilo).The Greek form ὀκτάστυλος is apparently not recorded.
