Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Occasionalism.
Etymology: < German †Occasionalism (1796 in the passages translated in quots. 17971, 17972; now Okkasionalismus ), apparently < post-classical Latin occasionalis occasional n. (compare German okkasionell ) + German †-ism -ism suffix. Compare French occasionnalisme (1845). Compare earlier occasionalist n. (compare sense 2 s.v.).
Philosophy.
A doctrine which explains all relations between events as resulting solely from the immediate causality of God; spec. the theory that the apparent causal interaction of mind and body arises from an event in one providing the occasion on which God acts to cause an event in the other.Associated chiefly with Cartesian philosophy of the 17th cent., notably with Malebranche and Geulincx, but also applied to other philosophical schools, such as medieval Islamic philosophy.
