Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Khoekhoe. Etymon: Khoekhoe !num-!num.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Khoekhoe !num-!num (compare San !num berry), but this has not been traced in modern Khoekhoe.C. A. Smith suggests that the name is ‘seemingly onomatopoeic, suggestive of the sound made when expressing pleasure at the taste of the fruits’ ( Common Names (1966) 352); compare nummy adj. and int.
Chiefly South African.
Any of several, spiny, evergreen, southern African shrubs or small trees of the genus Carissa (family Apocynaceae), which have fragrant white flowers and include the Natal plum, C. grandiflora; (also) the edible red or purple fruit of a plant of this kind.

1770 J. Banks Jrnl. (1962) II. 212 Nam Nam is shaped something like a kidney, very rough and rugged on the outside and about 3 inches long; it is seldom eat raw, but fryd with batter makes very good fritters.
1822 W. J. Burchell Trav. Interior S. Afr. I. x. 192 The Hottentots call this shrub 'Num'num (or Noomnoom, agreeably to English orthography), each syllable preceded by a guttural clap of the tongue.
