Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: German Nonett ; Italian nonetto ; Latin nōnus , -et suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 < German Nonett (1860 in the passage translated in quot. 1865 at sense 1) and its etymon Italian nonetto (mid 19th cent. or earlier as title of musical works) < nono ninth ( < classical Latin nōnus : see nona- comb. form) + -etto -et suffix1. In sense 2 perhaps independently < classical Latin nōnus + -et suffix1, after triplet n., etc.
