Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nūbilāt-, nūbilāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin nūbilāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of nūbilāre to become cloudy, in post-classical Latin also to cloud, darken (3rd cent. in literal use, 4th cent. in figurative use) < nūbilum cloud (use as noun of neuter of nūbilus cloudy) or nūbilus cloudy (see nubilous adj.). Compare later nubilation n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (niū·bileit) /ˈnjuːbɪleɪt/.
Obsolete. rare.
