Etymology: < scientific Latin Nosema (C. W. von Nägeli 1857, in Amtlicher Bericht über die Versammlung Deutsch. Naturforscher 33 133) < ancient Greek νόσημα disease < νοσεῖν to be ill ( < νόσος disease: see noso- comb. form) + -ημα, suffix forming nouns.

A genus of microsporidian protozoans which are parasitic mainly in insects; (also nosema) a parasite of this genus, esp. Nosema apis, which causes infectious dysentery in honeybees. Also (more fully nosema disease): this disease. Cf. pébrine n.
