Etymology: < post-classical Latin obvaricat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of obvaricare (7th cent. or earlier in an undated glossary; compare classical Latin obvāricātor a person who obstructs another in his way (recorded in a 2nd-cent. epitome of a 1st-cent. grammarian)) < classical Latin ob- ob- prefix + vāricāre to stretch the legs apart, to straddle (see prevaricate v.). Compare also divaricate v.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To obstruct (a person or a person's progress).
