Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French numérateur; Latin numerator.
Etymology: < Middle French, French numérateur number written above the line in a vulgar fraction (1484) and its etymon post-classical Latin numerator counter, arithmetician (late 4th cent. in Augustine; 1686 in Isaac Newton in sense 1a) < classical Latin numerāt- , past participial stem of numerāre numerate v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Italian numeratore (14th cent.), Spanish numerador (1705).
1. Mathematics.
a. The number written above the line in a vulgar fraction, showing how many of the parts indicated by the denominator are taken; the dividend in an algebraic fraction. Occasionally in extended use.
