Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Notornis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Notornis, genus name (R. Owen 1848, in Proc. Zool. Soc. 2) < ancient Greek νότος south wind, south (see Notus n.) + ὄρνις bird (see ornitho- comb. form).
New Zealand.
The takahe, Porphyrio mantelli (family Rallidae), a flightless rail of New Zealand; (also Notornis) the genus to which the takahe belongs, now usually included in the genus Porphyrio.
