Etymology: < noto- comb. form + -branchiate comb. form, after scientific Latin Notobranchiata (1870 or earlier). Compare scientific Latin †Notobranchia , proposed order name of a group of molluscs (J. E. Gray 1821, in London Med. Repository 15 232). Compare earlier notobranchious adj., and also dorsibranchiate adj. and n. at dorsi- comb. form .
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
Having dorsal branchiae or gills; spec. designating either of two groups formerly called Notobranchia or Notobranchiata, one of gastropod molluscs, the other of errant marine annelids.
