Etymology: < able adj. + -s suffix1. Compare earlier able adv., and later aiblins adv.The β. forms show development of a palatal on-glide (see discussion of forms at able adj., adv., and n.). K. Rydland Orton Corpus (1998) at Ables, records pronunciations reflecting β. forms from Northumberland in the 1930s.
Scottish (chiefly southern) and English regional (northern). Now rare.
