Not attested in the singular until early modern English.The α. forms show i-mutation of the stem vowel. The β. forms (with stem vowel u ), although in some early Middle English instances perhaps representing the regular western reflex of Old English y , in most cases apparently show restoration of the unmutated stem vowel after the name of the river.
