Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to West Frisian noardlik , Middle Dutch nordelijc , noortlijc (Dutch noordelijk ), Old High German nordlīh (German nordlich (now archaic), nördlich (18th cent.)), Swedish nordlig (1644), Danish nordlig < the Germanic base of north adv. + the Germanic base of -ly suffix1. Compare southly adj.The form north'ly (see quot. 1622) is apparently intended to suggest a shortening of northerly adj. The history of the word in English is not continuous.
Northern; northerly.In quot. eOE the noun modified by the adjective has not been included.Apparently unattested between the Old English period and the mid 16th cent. and again between the 17th and 19th centuries.
