Etymology: < classical Latin nōnus ninth (see nona- comb. form) + -an suffix, probably after French †nonane (16th cent. in Middle French as nonaine ). Compare classical Latin nōnānus belonging to the ninth legion. Compare earlier quartan n. and adj., tertian adj. and n.
