Etymology: < classical Latin nōnāgēnārius having ninety of anything, ninety years old ( < nōnāgēnī ninety each ( < nōnāgintā ninety (see nonagesimal adj. and n.) + -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives, after e.g. sēnī six apiece, six at a time, six) + -ārius -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare French nonagénaire (1660 as adjective, 1808 as noun; attested earlier in Middle French as nonagenaire (adjective) in sense ‘(of a number) which consists of 90 units’ (c1380); compare nonagenary n.).
