Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nivālis.

Etymology: < classical Latin nivālis snowy, covered in snow, formed of snow, resembling snow < niv- , nix snow (see snow n.¹) + -ālis -al suffix¹. With sense 2 compare French nivéal flowering in winter (1831), found in snow (1840; 1831 as nival in sense ‘(of a plant) living under the snow’; compare also Middle French, French nival (of a mountain) covered in snow (1532)). Compare Italian nivale (1473–4 in an isolated attestation; otherwise a1817).
