Etymology: Cognate with Old Frisian nettigia , Middle Dutch nutten (Dutch nutten ), Middle Low German nütten , nuytten , Old High German nuzzōn , nuzzan (also ginuzzen ; Middle High German nutzen , nützen , German nutzen , nützen ), Old Icelandic nytja to milk, Old Swedish nytia (Swedish nyttja ), Old Danish nyttiæ (Danish nytte ) < the same Germanic base as note n.1Several of the Germanic verbs (including the Old English) are unusual in that they show mutation in the stem vowel, despite belonging to the weak Class II; the reasons for this have not been satisfactorily explained, and are probably ultimately analogical (compare nut adj.1, nut n.2).
