1788 J. St. John tr. L. B. Guyton de Morveau et al. Method Chym. Nomencl. 142 Nitrites..salts formed by the combination of nitrous acid with different bases. This genus of salt had no name in the ancient nomenclature, and was not known before the late discoveries.
