Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nitrifier.
Etymology: < French nitrifier (P. Thouvenel Climat d'Italie (1797) II. 151) < nitre nitre n. + -fier -fy suffix. Compare earlier nitrified adj.
Chemistry and Biology.
1. transitive. Originally: to convert into or enrich with nitre; †to make (air) nitrous (obsolete). Now: spec. (chiefly of bacteria) to convert (ammonia) into a nitrite or nitrate. Also intransitive.
