Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French noel.

Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman and Old French noiel, noel (Middle French noel ) kernel, stone of fruit (see newel n.²), and if so probably borrowed much earlier than the earliest attestations below would indicate.
