Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese .
Etymology: < Japanese talent, ability (1603 as in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam; perhaps short for sarugaku no nōgei Sarugaku talent-entertainment) < a Middle Chinese base meaning ‘to be able’ (compare Chinese néng (verb) to be able to, (noun) ability).The form Nou reflects Japanese kana orthography, in which the syllable is represented by the symbols for no + u.
A traditional Japanese masked drama with dance, mime, and song, evolved largely from Shinto rites. Frequently attributive.
