Etymology: < ancient Greek νόησις intelligence, understanding, idea, concept, (plural) processes of thought < νοεῖν to see, perceive, understand, intend ( < νοῦς mind, thought: see nous n.) + -σις -sis suffix. Compare earlier noetic adj.1In sense 3 after German Noesis (E. Husserl, in Jahrbuch f. Philosophie u. phänomenologische Forschung 1 (1913) 194 ( Ideen zu einer reinen Phänomenologie u. phänomenologischen Philosophie i. iii. iii. § 94); compare noema n.).
