Etymology: < scientific Latin Nodosaria, genus name (1816, attributed to Lamarck; Lamarck Hist. nat. des animaux sans vertèbres (1822) VII. 595; < classical Latin nōdōsus nodose adj. + -ārius -ary suffix¹ + -a -a suffix²) + -an suffix.The genus name was reportedly published in a 16-page ‘Liste des objets représentés dans les planches de cette livraison’ (p. 13) accompanying a fascicle of plates from the Tableau encycl. et méthodique issued in 1816 under the supervision of Lamarck ( Bull. Zool. Nomencl. (1959) 17 16). Compare French Nodosaire, first recorded at a similar date.
