Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: nitrate n., nitrogen n.
Etymology: Apparently arbitrary alteration of either nitrate n. or nitrogen n., probably after a German form; compare quots. 1910 and 1920, and also:1898 Official Gaz. (U.S. Patent Office) 6 Dec. 1582/2 Artificial Dung. Farbwerke, vormals Meister, Lucius & Brüning,..Germany. Filed July 29, 1898. Nitragin... Used since March, 1896. On the ending of the word compare:1897 Science 7 Jan. 17/2 The commercial name of these preparations is nitragin, although, etymologically, probably the term nitrogene would have been preferable, but it was necessary to distinguish it in some way from the name of the element.
A proprietary name for: a fertilizer consisting of a culture of nitrogen-fixing bacteria obtained from the root nodules of leguminous plants.
