单词 nocti-
释义

nocti-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: before a vowel noct-.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nocti-, noct-, nox.
Etymology: < classical Latin nocti- (before a vowel noct-), combining form (in e.g. noctilūca noctiluca n., noctivagus : see noctivagous adj.) of nocti-, nox night (see night n.).First attested in words of Latin origin, earliest in the late 14th cent. in noctiluca n., in the 17th and 18th centuries in a large number of borrowings and adaptations of Latin words (as e.g. noctivagant adj., noctilucy n., noctambulo n., etc.), and in the 18th and 19th centuries in a small number of loans and adaptations of French words (see noctambule n., noctambulism n., noctiflorous adj. ). Formations in English are found from the second half of the 17th cent., earliest in noctiferous adj. . The second element of formations in nocti- is usually ultimately of Latin origin. A number of formations in nocti- (especially those with second elements derived ultimately from classical Latin ambulāre to walk) have parallels in somn- comb. form, some of which are attested earlier (see noctambulism n., noctambulistic adj., noctambulator n., noctambulate v., and also noctiferous adj. ). Compare post-classical Latin and scientific Latin nocti-, French nocti- (formations in which are found from the beginning of the 18th cent.).
