ninnyn.3

Brit. /ˈnɪni/, U.S. /ˈnɪni/
Forms: 1900s– ninna, 1900s– ninny.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Gullah. Etymon: Gullah nini.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Gullah nini (compare Mende nyíní breast, nipple, udder), or perhaps < a (reduplicated) syllable /ni/ which is characteristic of early infantile vocalization, or used by mothers to their infants as a simple, easily recognizable word; compare French néné breast (1842 as nénet, 1877 as nénais).
Chiefly U.S. regional (chiefly southern) slang.
The female breast (also ninny jug); breast milk.
