Etymology: < the name of the Ningyo Pass in Tottori Prefecture, Japan (Japanese Ningyō Tōge, lit. ‘Doll Pass’), famous for its uranium mines + -ite suffix¹, probably after Japanese ningyō-seki.

A translucent brown or brownish-green mineral which consists of a hydrated phosphate of calcium and uranium (usually with some cerium or other rare-earth elements), and belongs to the orthorhombic system.
