单词 nocence
释义

nocencen.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Latin. Or perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin nocentia ; innocence n.
Etymology: Perhaps < post-classical Latin nocentia guilt (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian, opposed to innocentia innocence n.) < classical Latin nocent- , nocēns , present participle of nocēre to hurt, injure (see nocent n. and adj.) + -ia -y suffix3 (compare -ence suffix), or perhaps an alteration of innocence n., with removal of the prefix (see in- prefix4) to create its antonym. Compare Middle French nocence shame or damage (in an isolated attestation). Compare earlier nocent adj. and slightly earlier nocency n.
Obsolete. rare.
Guilt; = nocency n.
