Etymology: Probably partly < Anglo-Norman and Old French noblei, nobloi (also in Anglo-Norman as noblai, nobeley) (masculine) nobility, richness, magnificence (second half of the 12th cent.), and partly < Anglo-Norman noblaie, nobleie, nobleye, noblie, nobloie (feminine) nobility, distinction, riches < noble noble adj. + -ie -y suffix4. Compare noblesse n., noblehead n., nobleness n., nobility n., noblety n., noblé n.2The δ. forms may be remodelled after or re-formed from -y suffix4 or -y suffix5; they could equally be interpreted as showing noblé n.2
