Etymology: < noble adj. + gas n.1 and adj., after German Edelgas (H. Erdmann Lehrb. der anorganischen Chem. (1898) 84).

Each of the elements helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon, all of which are colourless, odourless, and tasteless gases which were formerly thought to be completely unreactive chemically, forming no compounds (though compounds of some of the gases are now known). Also called inert gas, rare gas.Together they constitute a group of the periodic table, now numbered 18 in the IUPAC numbering, but also numbered 0 or VIII.noble gas is now the name officially preferred by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
