Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: non- prefix, Aryan n.
Etymology: < non- prefix + Aryan n. In sense 2 after German Nicht-Arier, in Nazi ideology (and its forerunners) a person who is not ‘Aryan’, especially a Jewish person (1920 or earlier; 1851 or earlier denoting a person who does not speak an Indo-European language). Compare slightly earlier non-Aryan adj.Perhaps also after German in early use: quot. 1853 at sense 1 translates a German text, although the underlying manuscript has not been traced. Compare the German models at Aryan n. 1 and non-Aryan adj. 1.
1. A person who does not speak an Indo-European language; (also) a person who was not a member of the group of prehistoric peoples thought to have spoken proto-Indo-European, the hypothetical language from which these languages are believed to derive. Contrasted with Aryan n. 1.Now less common than sense 2.
