Etymology: < Panjabi nīlgāū (and similar forms in other northern Indian languages) < Sanskrit nīla dark blue (see anil n.) + -gava (in compounds) ox, cow (see cow n.¹). In quot. 1672 via French nil-gaux , nil-gaus , plural (1670 in the source translated; nilgaut (1824), nilgau (1878 or earlier)). Compare Persian nil-gaw . Compare later nilgai n. N.E.D. (1907) enters this under nylghau and gives only the pronunciation (ni·lgǭ) /ˈnɪlɡɔː/. The long first vowel in the Panjabi and Sanskrit etymons is reflected in some of the early spellings, and these suggest that the word was in fact pronounced /ˈniːl-/ by speakers who knew its origin. The modern practice of transcribing ī as i has tended to lead increasingly to a spelling pronunciation with short /ˈnɪl-/ among English speakers unconversant with the source languages.
