(1907) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (nī·lgai) /ˈniːlɡaɪ/, which reflects awareness of the long first vowel in the Marathi and Sanskrit etymons. The modern practice of transcribing ī as i has tended to lead increasingly to a spelling pronunciation with short /ˈnɪl-/ among English speakers unconversant with the source languages.
